The Housing Authority is seeking offers to purchase the Crystal Towers apartment community and developing it to its highest and best use for the benefit of the City of Winston-Salem. The Crystal Towers Apartment Community is a two-hundred one (201) unit, eleven (11) story high-rise constructed in 1970 and located at 625 West Sixth Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

For Immediate Release - Seeking Offers to Purchase Crystal Towers Site

August 15, 2018 (Winston-Salem, NC) – The Winston-Salem Housing Authority’s Board of Commissioners voted yesterday to allow interested parties to submit purchase offers on the Crystal Towers apartment community. Crystal Towers, an 11-story high-rise located at 625 West Sixth Street in downtown Winston-Salem, was opened in 1970 and is home to approximately 200 residents. The Housing Authority’s Request for Offers will be published on its website,, and will be open from August 20, 2018 through October 15, 2018.

Mr. Alfred G. Adams is a member of our HAWS Board of Commissioners. Commissioner Adams is a retired attorney who has been very active in the revitalization of downtown Winston-Salem. Having earned both his undergraduate and his Juris Doctor degrees from Wake Forrest University (WFU), where he also served for a time as adjunct faculty, he is a valued member of the WFU community.

We are notifying you about a change in the smoking policy at all of our Public Housing communities.

As of June 1, 2018, smoking will be prohibited in common areas, apartment units, and within the footprint of our community, including porches and balconies for all family communities. The High Rise buildings will have one designated smoking location in an outside location. This new policy applies to all residents, guests, employees and contractors.

HUD published a final rule for each Public Housing Agency administering low-income, conventional public housing to initiate a smoke-free policy. The effective date of the Rule is February 3, 2017, and it provides an 18-month implementation period.
